Ear Piercing Q&A
At what age can my child get ear piercing?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that ear piercing is safe at any age as long as it’s done in a sterile environment, performed carefully, and properly cared for afterwards. Choosing to get pierced ears is purely a personal decision made by parents and their kids.
Dr. Atousa and the staff at Healthy Kids Care Pediatrics at Sunrise offer ear piercing from infancy through early adolescence. However, all infants must be at least two months old and have received their first set of vaccines before getting their ears pierced.
What happens during ear piercing?
During your child’s ear piercing, your provider will go through all the during and after care for your child's earl lobes to make sure you are comfortable before moving forward. They then proceed and carefully clean the front and back of the earlobe with an alcohol swab and use a marker to make a dot where they will insert each earring.
Dr. Atousa uses the MediSystem® professional ear-piercing system, which comes individually wrapped in sterile packages, so you can be sure your child is safe. Your provider unwraps the device, places it over the dot, and squeezes it to pierce the ear and insert the earring.
Despite numbing their earlobes, your child may feel a pinch when the earrings go in, but the process is quick. Soon they’re so happy with the new earrings that they forget about the pinch.
How can I prevent an infection after an ear piercing?
MediSystem uses titanium earrings to reduce the risk of an allergic or inflammatory reaction. But after you leave the office, you still need to take care of the site to be sure an infection doesn’t set in.
You apply the MediSystem cleaning solution, rubbing alcohol, or an antibiotic ointment to the area twice each day for a few days. Your child should also keep their earrings in for four to six weeks, until the area heals enough to stay open. You will also need to rotate or turn each earring every day.
If you notice any redness or the area becomes tender, schedule an appointment right away so Dr. Atousa can take a look and be sure your child doesn’t have an infection.
